Rapid Inbreeding®
A faster path from breeding populations to testable inbred lines.
Rapid Inbreeding® (RI) is PSR’s proprietary system for developing new corn inbreds to the S4–S8 level within a single season while producing useful quantities of seed for hybrid development and testing.
See how RI worksA practical breeding engine
Move from population diversity to lines that can be tested.
RI allows PSR to begin with a substantial source population, identify plants expressing a useful range of characteristics and rapidly develop those selections into advanced-generation inbred lines.
The resulting seed can move into hybrid creation, field evaluation and further line purification. RI can be applied to PSR populations or customer-supplied material, depending on program goals and ownership terms.
Preserving selection diversity
One population.
A wider field of possibilities.
A key value of RI is the ability to carry a broad group of visibly different selections forward from the same population. Those selections may represent differences in maturity, plant type, ear characteristics and other observable traits.
This creates a practical way to explore more of a population’s potential before narrowing the program through hybrid testing and advancement decisions.
Top-performing lines can be recombined to form new breeding populations, allowing the cycle of selection, inbreeding and evaluation to begin again.
Illustrative workflow. Population size, selection intensity and resulting line counts vary by germplasm and program objectives.
RI and other breeding approaches
A flexible option within a broader breeding strategy.
Doubled-haploid systems can be highly effective, but the practical number of lines produced from a population may be influenced by cost, biological response and program design. RI offers another route when broader sampling, useful seed quantities or difficult genetic backgrounds are important.
The appropriate method depends on the germplasm, objectives, testing plan and economics of each program.
